These birds have sensory receptors on their beaks, so I bet the blood and getting touched felt very strange!

As the human the only thing that could have been done differently was maybe to install a metal plate over the entrance, to keep the woodpecker from enlarging the opening. It is always a good idea to have the opening the smallest size that will allow the passage of the bird species you wish to see in the nest box. Any larger will allow entry of larger aggressive or predatory birds.

Rest in peace, Simon. Thank you all you have done, not only in the defense of wildlife, but also in the education, and not least entertainment, of us "ordinary mortals. You have surely deserved relaxing and sitting back to watch your legacy grow.

Whoever built that box should have reinforced the entrance with metal to keep the woodpecker from making a bigger hole. That would have saved the baby birds. Hope they will take that precaution in the future.

I missed viewing this video when it was made - seeing it now and watching Simon release this sweet woodcock brings memories of Simon's many rescues and his wonderful love and care for all the wild creatures of the world. Simon you are missed but have left us this great legacy of Wildlife Aid aas well as all the team members who so lovingly worked with you.

I’m very sad Simon Cowell has passed away, he was a hero who made a brilliant service for devoting his life into rescuing and saving animals, he was funny, he really made a difference, he was a good man, very hard working, helpful, brilliant and had a character, I miss this man a lot and will miss watching him on videos, he has inspired me to see the swans and I rescued swan when it was booted out by his parents and took him to another lake, R.I.P Simon Cowell, thank you for the service and you won’t be forgotten

These videos tear me up every time. As much as I love animals, I would be useless around them when faced with such a decision. I am literally in tears now and would be even more so when having to do the kind thing of ending the suffering. I still hope that , should I live in Surrey again, that I can help however possible.

Foxes do NOT behave this way asking humans for help. Humans saw the fox cub in the net and called Wildlife Aid. Please do your research before believing these videos.
